Do. The. Math

Talking Points Memo: Add It Up on how well-paid, shadowy-ass, bush/cheney-connected groups are trying to lead the US into a war with Iran. Ok, people, let’s go over this one more time: 1. The US government is addicted to war. 2. It’s time to get our government off the ‘war’ crack pipe. 3. Just say ‘no’ already. 4. don’t be an enabler. Have I missed anything?

Lightbox Spamvertising

Hold on to your hats folks, some people are starting to use a Lightbox rip-off to deliver ads, and there’s no pop-up blocker that works for it (yet). what a way to misappropriate an interesting piece of code.

Kanye West has a blog

Kanye West has a blog and he posts 2 to 3 times a day?! unbelievable.

The Güero has left the building

andrewandrewraquel, andrew, maru

Last weekend, unbeknownst to us (and probably to him), we spent our last weekend galavanting around Mexico’s insane natural playground with Andrew: soul surfer, gourmet vegan chef, proprietor of Roots and our good buddy.

Andrew has decided to follow his heart to big, bad NYC. pretty good freakin’ choice. I can’t say I blame him and Marcia and I wish him the best as he continues to look for the good in all things and cook up marvelous eats. We’re still reeling over losing such a good friend, but since NYC is like the center of my universe, I’m sure we’ll be kickin’ it real soon. The real question is what the hell are we gonna do without Roots, we gwon starve to death. A brother can only eat so many quesadillas and tacos…

On second thought: Andrew come back, homie, we gotta eats. pinche güero.

UPDATE: This is unbelievable. Andrew, only two days in NYC, stumbles into Blossom (gourmet vegan cuisine) in Chelsea and subsequently talks his way into becoming their head chef for the new cafe they’re opening on the upper west side. He’s now preparing the menu and overseeing the end of construction on the kitchen, you go Andrew, shheeeit!. the boy is golden. People, if you’re in NYC, don’t sleep, you gotta try Andrew’s cooking. it’s the shiznit.

and make sure you catch him before his tan disappears, suckerrrrr.

Magazine Layouts with WP Revisited

Revolution Theme and Revolution News Theme are two magazine style layout themes for WordPress. Both themes are well designed and coded, the idea is to take the themes and add your own styling and ’sparkle’. A good jumping off point to making your WP site less default WP-like. A word of note: I think his pricing is shortsighted and prohibitively expensive. Que lastima!

30gms

30gms has a really gorgeous top navigation going on. Weighted color bars for the various tags used on each post, like a weighted tag cloud without the visual affront to the typographically inclined. nice color choices too. i wonder what they’re using to generate this. [via CP]

Burma Solidarity

All hell is breaking loose in Burma / Myanmar right now. The military junta have been killing protesting monks and citizens for the past week, just as they did 19 years ago. This hits very close to home for several obvious reasons. What’s more, our good friend Monica, came back from Burma last year after having lived there for two years. She just sent me a link to a petition that will be delivered to UN Security Council members and international media all week long. Take a few moments to read about the situation and do the right thing, Mookie, sign the petition.

Reed Danziger

Reed Danziger has some gorgeous paintings. I love the abstract textures and little touches. His work definitely has a passing analog/digital discourse with the work of Joshua Davis. The difference being that Danzinger creates his compositions by hand, whereas Davis uses programming to create his. [via Art/Moco]

Ecostrip Power Bar

File this one under: I can’t believe no one’s thought of this one before now. Ecostrip Power Bar is a powerstrip with a usb connection. plug it into your computer. and when you turn your computer off, the powerstrip turns off the peripherals attached to it, to save electricity. genius.

Pinniped

I’m super diggin’ on the surf culture vibe of Pinniped’s Uber Tees. especially love the “Milton Glaser - I ♥ sufboards” tee (classic graphic design and surfing is always a good combo). ty-eet. good blog and good art. [via 70%]

Applied Projects

I’m loving the graphic design / web / photography work of Applied Projects, a newish company started by Rune Høgsberg, who has made some of my most favoritist photography portfolio sites from years past. [via It'sNiceThat]

Joshua Davis

QBN Sessions was a few weeks ago and snippets of the presentations have hit the web. One snippet in particular caught my attention. That of Graphic Designer / Programmer Joshua Davis (his work). It really interested me to hear him explain how he essentially compartmentalizes the various processes in his work, I’d definitely like to see the full presentation. [via everywhere]

Amy Stein

I just stumbled upon Amy Stein’s photography and blog. great stuff on both sites, her writing is only surpassed by her photography. love the splash image of the wolves(?!) eating suburban trash. nice! [via Alec Soth]

Jen Bekman interviews Alec Soth

Jen Bekman interviews Alec Soth for Photo-Eye Magazine about his involvement in Magnum’s Fashion Magazine where high-fashion Parisians mix it up with normal Minnesotans, great concept, great interview. Bekman really gets into Soth’s process and how he differentiates between his editorial and fine art work and brings it all together. a really good read.

WordPress 2.3

WordPress 2.3 is in the wild, I’ve got it up and running. looks nice, can’t wait to play with the new ‘tags’ feature. I’ve been feeling that my ‘daily link’ posts have been rudderless without some kind of sub-categorization within the ‘daily links’ category, so tags will probably be good for that. Also, anyone running the Sideblog plugin, remember to save your config file as you’ll need to upgrade it as well (i learned the hard way!). I’m also noticing some jerkiness with my css file and form elements, so ten cuidado.

Barry McGee at Redcat

Attention Lost Angelinos: Barry McGee has a show at REDCAT (under Ghery’s Disney Concert Hall) and it’s open right now. it runs from Sept 14th to Nov 25th. go check it out! [via FaderBlog]

Amazing surfing footage of JAWs (Pehai), Maui. at 50 Feet. My stomach was in my throat watching this. Dudes are crazy. [via SU]

Felipe Hefler

Brazilain graphic designer Felipe Hefler has some nice work. I especially dig on the ‘fullscreen mode’. It’s slightly disorienting at first, but I’m surprised more sites, especially movie sites don’t use ‘fullscreen mode’ more often. Its definitely got that immersive vibe thing going on. [via The K]

where vehicles are left to die

where vehicles are left to die. brilliant internets research by Deputy Dog with some ‘beautiful decay’ photos. This guy continually brings really interesting randomness to my rss reader, usually in the form of photo essays and always very well thought out and footnoted.

Three Days in Yelapa

yelapa sept07

This past weekend we took the second of two trips to Yelapa this month (we’re super lucky, I know). We stayed at a really nice little house on the rocks above the water on the northwest side of Yelapa Bay. Days were filled with casual reading in hammocks, food and trips to the two waterfalls (one in Yelapa, the other an hour or so up the river). Fer, Fritz, Raquel, Andrew and Maru joined us and Chato and Malaney checked in on Saturday for a quick day trip. It was super nice to be able to kick the old feet up and enjoy the breezes.

With regards to photography, I approached this trip having “lifestyles” imagery in mind and really made an effort to grab the more candid moments. the details and little things that made the weekend enjoyable. images that may not stand up on their own, but when viewed collectively, tell a story. let’s hope it worked.

Anthony Barbatto

Anthony Barbatto has some really nice shortboard surfing action pics. great colors and spot on detail. very pro. and incidentally, he’s an editor for Land+Living. nice.

Curbed LA: Hollywood Prettiness

Pre-Mexico, I owned a web design company called Mostasa with my main homie Melvitax. Today in my rss reader, I ran across a post on Curbed LA about our old office space, as I was talking to him on iChat. cue the eery music. The office was like a New York-style loft, in Los Angeles. golden.

Nicolas Chorier

Nicolas Chorier’s kite aerial photography is gorgeous. Click on “Editions > India” (sorry no deep link). His aerial photography of India is incredible. It’s almost impossible to take aerial photos in India and this guy has managed to do just that Places you’ve seen before but from totally new angles. really amazing shots. [via The Serif]

Falling Correctly

We popped off to Yelapa for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, back just in time for a little groundswell coming in. Sunday morning I fell hard, twice and my neck is starting to really stiffen up. It was nice to get out to Burros again, waist to shoulder high but redinkulously long times between sets and a few too many longboarders politely stealing all the waves (no offense longboarders). I had some really nice rides and the aforementioned biffs, one falling backwards feet over head right on to middle back area (a reverse belly flop) and the other, the always painful “falling over sideways and neck snapping to the right as you hit the water”. Both moves were from the lip and a good six feet down. It’s really nice to feel the water in that way. The new ATL shortboard is still coming with the good.

Swerve Festival ‘07

Headz-Up Lost Angels peoples: Swerve Festival ‘07 is this coming weekend. I’d be going for Control, Surfwise, Beautiful Losers and staying for sweet art works by Geoff McFetridge, Cheryl Dunn, Thomas Campbell, Ed Templeton and a bunch more. [via The K]
