Gymnastics Will Kick Your Ass

In an attempt to keep us all in tip-top form, Fritz and Raquel have organized a gymnastics class for all us gravity/age-prone 20/30 somethings withnokids complete with car pool. They had a tester class last week and yesterday was their first official class. Late to the party, Marcia and I tagged along, doubtful that we’d make the 30 minute drive to Vallarta for an 8pm gymnastics class a regular 2 nights a week kinda thing.

We started with warmup calisthenics and as we went in to the exercises I knew I was in trouble. I’m a pretty regular surfer and I’ve been swimming a mile and a half at least twice a week for the past few months. In Los Angeles, I practiced Iyengar Yoga for a year. I consider myself at the least to be semi-in-shape. Within 5 minutes, the exercises had me out of breath and dizzy. 10 minutes in, I had sweat through my shirt. 20 minutes in, and I could barely stay upright, sweat pouring off every part of my body, head between my legs to keep from seeing black. We ended the session by practicing flips on the running trampoline into the giant foam pit. It was super fun and well worth the 25 minutes of brutal exercises.

I’m still not sure if I can hack the 30 minute drive, both ways, but car pooling definitely makes it easier. And after the session, my abs were tighter then they’ve been in 10 years, make that 15. There’s something about the boot camp mentality I like. I need an instructor making sure I don’t jello out. Left to my own devices, I definitely cut the corners. Maybe we’ll make it a regular thing.
