The Faces Of Asia book

I spent yesterday creating a book for the Photography Book Now competition. The book is called The Faces Of Asia, A series of spontaneous portraits taken on the streets of Bali, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and India. The pictures were taken on our travels through Asia from Dec.’06 to Feb.’07.

I created the book using Blurb.com’s slightly clunky but easy-to-use BookSmart desktop app. Blurb has a funky little flash preview, so go take a look.

The book is super simple, 128 pages, one portrait per page. I designed it as a 8×10 portrait format soft cover. I personally think Blurb’s prices are a little high, printing on demand is definitely still a luxury. The book runs $42, which is way too high. I’m not really expecting anyone to be able to afford a book at that price, but if you want a book, it’s there for the taking.

nice - did you get a copy yet? hows it look?
also, can you print it elsewhere later (like does it keep your layout transferable)?

hey bro jammie. haven’t gotten it yet. you can definitely save out the layout to a pdf for printing for later, the problem is that you have to print at the exact dimensions of the template. you can’t go back and change it, if your printer has different dimensions for you (like if the printer’s dimensions vary by fractions of an inch or something).

    ed,
this is absolutely gorgeous… rock on man!
    :)
love your photography & design work, and love these beautiful portraits. the guy in the red wrap on the bottom left looks strikingly like a guy i met in new delhi named RV… he was the security guard at the place I was staying at, and we’d hang out eating Bikanervala sweets, talking about his cow herd in the hills while I was drawing the street. it’s random encounters like that that really make travelling a treasure.

    bright blessings to you,
    Leonie

    Hey Ed
Thanks for checking out my site and for the props. Cool surf/Mex/photo/news/culture/art blog you have going on here. I forwarded it to a few friends.

You should report back on your thoughts on the print quality of your Blurb book. And maybe you should make on from your surf adventures in Old Mexico.

I dig the Philly cheese stake with mushrooms and without the Cheese Whiz.

    later
