- People in the Middle for Obama
Errol Morris, former crime detective, documentary filmmaker and creator of the "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" commercials, hits it home with this new "switcher" campaign "Between the far right and the extreme left are people in the Middle. We asked these common-sense Americans why they're voting for Barack Obama". the videos are awesome. and far from feeling put together by a political campaign operation, which they weren't.
- What Sarah Palin Is Saying - Anil Dash
linguistics applied to Sarah Palin's deplorable speeches: "Put simply, if Palin says "Barack Obama consorts with terrorists", she is making the assertion that he supports acts of violence against American citizens and the media will refute this obviously false assertion. If, instead, Palin says he "pals around with terrorists", she's used code-switching to mask the seriousness of the charge, obfuscating her meaning enough to get away with making an assertion that inevitably calls for the imprisonment or even assassination of a political opponent." - Social Security Admin's Popular baby names
the list of popular names is searchable by year. awesome. a commenter on this post 10 ways to avoid hipster baby names (atrocious article, good comments) points to the Social Security admin's list of popular baby names. The commenter's advice is to look at the 500 most popular names from last year and stay way from the top 50, and stay away from the bottom 200. pick a name from the 50th to 300th. and then you know you'll be safe. great resource.
- MTV MUSIC
You can actually watch videos on MTV again! how cool is that? well, let me qualify that: on mtmusic.com. nice looking video though. nothing like a little old De La video to make yer day better. Now who thinks MTV shoulda done this 10 years ago?

These are their words on the music that inspires them." playlists come with listenable songs. 2x awesome

You know somethings’ wrong when you go to load your boards on to the car before dawn and there’s ice on your hood. Yes, I know cold water surfing is all the rage, what with Alaskan waves looking like Barra and warming systems in suits, but I can’t quite get used to the idea, yet. Maybe it’s that I was finally able to wear a pair of pants, only yesterday, for the first time in six months without sweating profusely.
Surf hermano Stevey Bissonnette has a wickedly inspired set from last weekend’s foray into cold water surf: Big Waves and Cold Days: Full Report. Talk about inspiration. whoa. and some serious size in a few shots. The photo set is definitely best viewed full screen large.
For those of you not familiar with Steve. He’s a design/techie who lives in Montreal and when he’s not pulling weekend work duty he’s hauling ass down the eastern seaboard to hit up hidden surf gems. This guy has probably been in the water more this fall than I have and I live 15 minutes from my break and the water is 70 degrees.
- Red: Red Confirms DSLR, Says It's Bigger "Revolution" Than Red One
Red enters Canon and Nikon DSLR territory: "While (insert code name) is not a replacement for Epic or Scarlet, it is strategically targeted at the DSLR space. As Nikon and Canon release their 720P and 1080P, respectively, DSLRs with video capture… RED has a more advanced view of the future."
Things are going to get real interesting, real fast.
- The Obama Tax Calculator
file this one under: cutting through the bullshit. Put in your info, find out what your tax break will be, between Obama's plan and McCain's plan.
Although, to be honest, i really would rather Obama campaign on "Change" rather than how much he'll lower your taxes. sure, we all hate to pay taxes, and some people need a big break, but paying taxes is part of having infrastructure that works, schools that teach, peaceful streets, clean tap water, clean garbage treatment systems and recycling programs, modern sewage treatment facilities and a thousand other things most of us take for granted. paying taxes should be a civic pride.
For those that disagree with me, come live in Mexico for a year. It will blow your gourd.

Look at these two photos. How could you not love this family. It’s plainly clear that there is some major love going on here. These photos are not manicured. These kids are just like any kids you know in your neighborhood. Theirs souls bursting out of their slightly self-conscious smiles. These parents could be friends of yours. I get all melty inside when I think this dad and mom could be / should be / will be the next President and First Lady of the United States.
It gives me warm feelings to know that when Obama is on the phone with Putin and whoever from Iran, trying to smooth over icey foreign relations, that his two daughters Malia and Sasha will be wrapped around his legs giving him much needed love and support. That’s what I’m talkin about, real change! If Obama brings half the love that is displayed in this family, to his new job we’re all gonna be alright.
These photos come from Time Magazine photojournalist Callie Shell, who has been travelling with Obama for 18 months. She has an extensive set of photos up at The Digital Journalist. The photos are full of candid, unposed in-between moments that really capture his true character. Go see the ice-cream parlor photo and accompanying bit of text, it’s so worth it.

Garamond Powerline is a beautiful typeface made from photos of power lines. When shrunk and put into a sentence (as above) the letters look illustrated, when you view the letters individually, larger, you can see that the shapes are made from actual photos.
Brilliant idea. with a bit of serendipity thrown in for sweet measure.

In response to recent musings at Pineapple Lurve, I present proof I used to be a ripper in white reebok high-tops and double swatches. The skate deck? Neon 80s Gonz by Andy Takakjian (I had the white version).
Bonus shot:

Red checked Vans, pink skinny tie and Miami Vice white jacket. holy shit.
- Poladroid project : the easiest and funniest Polaroid Image Maker
don't like the way your dinky little point n shoot takes photos? give your digi photos new life with a super simple drag-n-drop polaroid photos maker app. awesome! I could deal without having the whole "staying true to the polaroid experience thing" by having to wait for the photo to "develop". I tried "shaking" the photo, but it didn't develop any faster.

- "Dear Red States…" A Letter From The Blue!
"Dear Red States…
We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and
we're taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon,Washington,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We
believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially
to the people of the new country of New California. "… well worth the read. definitely email forwarding material
- Intersections: Slow journalism movement?
"Never heard of the Slow Journalism Movement? We barely have either — a phrase coined by Naka Nathaniel to describe the growing practice of journalists sharing resources and caring less about beating their competition to the big story than about practicing human rights activism and doing the right thing. Nathaniel and Mister Jalopy both associate this trend in journalism with the Slow Food Movement. What are the commonalities? Few are better equipped to speak about slow food than Josh Viertel, and few have explored and exercised possible conjunctions between slow food and the arts than Peter Sellars."

fins sketch, digital this time. just playing with ideas.

Born To Lose has a timely, funny and ultimately tragic look at our tax system. Explained in the only way most people understand it: through the cost of beer. I gotta say, even with the beer, I almost nodded off in a few places and I have a college degree and I’ve owned my own small business. It’s no wonder why middle and lower income people have no idea how candidates’ tax platform will realistically effect them. Thesis: trickle down economics does not work.
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. ‘Since you are all such good customers, he said, ‘I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
Go to Born to Lose for the rest, it’s totally worth it.
