“La LLorona” from the upcoming March of the Zapotec EP by Beirut. Animated and Directed by Owen Cook
Today continues to be a day of awesome new music finds, I’m having a hard time concentrating on work. A little birdy hipped me to Beirut’s new “March of the Zapotec EP” and I gotta say that it breaks any pre-conceptions about what I thought new Beirut music would sound like. It was recorded in Oaxaca, Mexico (which makes me oddly proud) and sounds like an updated version of Beirut’s previous albums, where balkan gypsy folk music has been augmented by big brass Mexican funeral dirge sounds. The backing band is Banda Jimenez, a 19-piece from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca1.
I got shivers listening to La Llorona2 for the first time.
- hat tip to The Red Radio ↩
- “La Llorona” is a “weeping woman” and is pronounced like “La Yorona” ↩
