Alaia, I luv Ya

alaiaEd’s current lust object

Please file this under: “There are no stupid questions”.

I’m pretty much assuming that if you have the chops to surf an Alaia, you don’t worry about having a leash. But what do you do in crowded breaks? If you happen to fall off (gods forbid) does the board turn in to a lethal object?

And now for my stupid question1: where’s the leash plug?

Above photo politely borrowed from super awesome man Graham and the Shelter Surf Shop blog, without whose semi-weekly posts of fresh, new boards my life would be exponentially less exciting. Oh and don’t even think you’re gonna swoop in and buy that framed Tmoe print in the background, that’s mine. I call dibbs.

  1. rhetorical, of course

  • Look & Sea: A Little Experimentation Never Hurt Nobody
and even more alaia-madness. these are some guys who are experimenting with various different forms of wooden finless shapes. some of the longest and thickest boards i've ever seen. beautiful rides in this video, it gets really good around the 10 minute mark, some beautiful alaia riding, some true bending of the plank.
  • Under the Sun Surf Film Blog: Alaia Sliding in Cardiff
keeping on the alaia page, here's some recently past footage of Cyrus Sutton sliding on an alaia, from his blog, which for some reason hadn't made it into my rss folder. that's all changed now.
  • Look at this fucking hipster
one of my current guilty pleasure websites. kinda takes what the cobra snake was doing and distills it even further. the captions are the clincher. down in mexico hipster fashion is 3 years behind (at least in my neck of el campo) and mostly limited to emo styles. so when i’m feeling a bit too far removed from the big city, I check on this blog. eggcelent.
  • Peter Funch – photographer
great conceptual photography. Funch plays with the concept of time and the decisive moment in his work, among other themes. [via ncbeets's tweet]
  • How to Save Newspapers (Or, Why the NYT Should Acquire Twitter) – Umair Haque – HarvardBusiness.org
great article and he's dead on. The New York Times is in a precarious position, either charge ahead full steam or die swimming, like the rest of its peers. The good thing about the NYT is that they are the most forward looking news rag and buying twitter isn't a long shot by any stretch. Very interesting.

  • Seahuggers: Wood is Good
Seahuggers has collected all 4 parts of the Tom Wegener / Patagonia film on one page. If you don't know who Tom Wegener is, he makes sustainable wood surfboards and he specializes in making finless surfboards called Alaias, which were the first surfboard planks used by Polynesians to surf waves. Wegener is partly responsible for the Alaia's strong comeback and surfing's renewed interest in alternative materials and shapes.
  • Patagonia – The Tin Shed
Amazing website documenting all the cool things going on, over at Patagonia. really nicely executed flash website with a ton of video and other goodies. I wonder who created this site. definitely worthy of some heavy time wasting. plus there is a hidden discount code in the site, so keep your eyes peeled.
  • Puerto Escondido Beach Cam Show From Hotel Santa Fe
did you know that there is a live web cam in Puerto Escondido? file this under: things I did not know.
  • Mark Batty Publisher
This book imprint publishes some really nice titles. I was turned on to them by the "Mexican Blackletter" book and pleasantly surprised to find all of their titles are just as interesting. a heavy slant towards design, typography and street art. and all of their titles are moderately priced. definitely worth a look.
