  • Photojournalism – Lens Blog – NYTimes.com
The NY TImes' new "Lens" blog has the dopest interface for a photo blog ever. Really nicely designed and perfect for viewing several different series of images. This is now one of my daily visits. Check out the Jacob Holdt series, on racism in America. mindblowing. His "American Pictures" book looks sick.
  • YouTube – Gerry Lopez Shaping Demo
video of Gerry Lopez in the shaping booth from Sacred Craft Surf Expo 09. amazing! I really wish he took the time to explain, more, exactly what he was doing. and I could do without the music, this is school here folks. pay attention.
  • Dan Baum: The Following Account of My Short Career at The New Yorker Ran as a Series of Tweets
The Following Account of My Short Career at The New Yorker Ran as a Series of Tweets on May 8, 11, and 12, 2009* "People often ask why I left the New Yorker. After all, I had a staff writer job. Isn’t that the best job in journalism? Yes. Nobody leaves a New Yorker job voluntarily. I was fired. And over the next few days, I’ll tell that story here, in 140 " – great story told in 140 chunks.
  • Copyright Critics Rationalize Theft – WSJ.com
utterly retarded article on how writers, composers, designers and other content creators whose work is easily copied/duplicated need to fight back with copyright against the faceless masses of copyright breakers. Let's get this straight people: COPYRIGHT IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. Copyright is the domain of crumbling, antiquated civilizations. end of story.
  • 007: Daniel Craig | Icon_ology
some behind the scenes photos of Daniel Craig on the 007 film sets. amazing. dude is classy. definitely Steve McQueen bad-ass style. I think He's easily the best Bond since Connery, maybe better than the original.

Lovers’ Land

I’m not quite sure what Lovers’ Land is. It looks like a bike tour and an art show of the items collected during the trip. The whole thing is very cryptic yet highly inspirational. As far I can tell, Dustin Humphrey and a few buddies, realizing their mutual appreciation of motorcycles, took off on a trip across Australia – on some seriously bad-ass motorcycles – in search of waves and all things artful. They found it all.

The presentation on the blog is beautifully low-tech, filled with photos, videos, illustrations and words – both typed and scribbled. I really like the intentionally undesigned aesthetic. It seems to me that this is the perfect idea for a book.

and this from the “About Us”:

Excellant project, amazing art. peep it and be inspired to go on your own surf/moto/art trip. Me? Oaxaca is calling my name like a jealous lover….

  • Chávez creates overnight bestseller with book gift to Obama
"A 36-year-old historical tract attacking the imperialist exploitation of Latin America has become an improbable overnight bestseller after the Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez abruptly presented a copy to Barack Obama." – add Obama's moves to open relations with Cuba and I don't know how much more happier I could be about having Obama in office. This guy has a shopping list of wrongs (our country has done over the past 40 years) and he is righting every one of them. Obama is an inspirational dude. I know I've linked it before, but for a good primer on the subject of exploitation of Latin American read "Confessions of an Economic Hitman".
  • Voules Random
great indie electronic mp3 blog. tons of great music here. try Wolfy vs. Projections. reminds of the old 'Moon Tribe' years, albeit my kind of electronic music stops at royksopp. if you can dance to it, i probably won't dig it. it took my 10 years to appreciate Daft Punk.
  • Shawn MORTENSEN ::: PHOTOGRAPHY
amazing body of work by Mortensen who recently passed away at the age of 43 (?!). Mortensen seems to have been at the epicenter of several different underground art movements over his 20+ yrs shooting. His list of subjects is *deep*. more info over at SuperTouch

  • Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable « Clay Shirky
"The problem newspapers face isn’t that they didn’t see the internet coming. They not only saw it miles off, they figured out early on that they needed a plan to deal with it, and during the early 90s they came up with not just one plan but several."

  • TPM Photo Features | Talking Points Memo | Just Say No Yes to Earmarks
"When the 2009 spending bill passed last week, Republicans on the Hill– and the stray Dem — were united in a chorus of earmark-bashing. In the words of Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY): "Cut 'em all out." But it turns out that while the senator from Kentucky voted against the bill, he had $10.6 million in earmarks — 13 separate earmarks, to be exact — in the bill. And he is by no means alone. Several members touted their opposition to the bill and then voted against it, even as they tucked in earmarks for their own districts (thanks to Taxpayers for Common Sense). Oh the shame." – I guess it's useless to question why we're getting stuff like this from TPM and not CNN or NBC?

But still, very addictive. and you get 10 free captures. great way to hook you into the paying service.
