  • Colorful writing – The Mex Files
the fine art of "notas rojas" (red notes). Mex Files details the "purple prose typical of the yellow journalism" of police reports in local mexican newspapers: "While sometimes the author — to stretch out the word count — has to resort to low tricks like referring to a police car as a “blue and white 2008 Dodge Neon, with plate number… “, the nota rota writer strives for variation in his or her craft. The banality of criminal activity sometimes reduces even the most creative of nota roja writers to clichés (there are a plethora of ways to say “corpse” — the center of attention but least interesting character in any murder story – all of which have been use to death), but the best are true artists. They still manage to surprise us, enlighten us and delight us with their mastery of the language."

  • I Gave My 3 Year Old an iPhone: Have I Created a Monster?
awesome piece on young children using the iphone to learn. some of you are already cringing (yes you, in the back), but I think it's great. this kind of thing is gonna be so standard in 20 years. I thin it's kind of scary to think that the jobs your kids will have when they grow up, won't be invented til they're in high school. and your kids will learn two to four times as much as you have, in your whole lifetime, by the time they get out of college. • 10 QUESTIONS: ZACH KEENAN | SURFLINE.COM
great interview with Zach Keenan who is a pro surfer and strict vegan. the interview details his raw food diet and how he prepares for travel. very interesting read. the one important thing that never gets brought up, is that if you travel with your food, and it's raw, most of it doesn't need prepping. you eat and go. I can't tell you how many trips I've been on, where I've eaten dodgy food, simply because that's all there was to eat. some people may think Keenan's diet is picky. I think it's smart! • 180 South trailer – Woodshed Films
oh snaps! the trailer for the new Malloy Brothers film due out later this year. gonna be good. very exciting! great cinematography. (and unreleased Fleet Foxes on the soundtrack?). also check the site.
  • Phil Coffman on Neill Blomkamp's District 9
District 9 is a raw and gritty cgi filled movie about aliens moving into the slums of Soweto, based on the short film Alive in Joburg. The movie is produced by Peter Jackson and is one of his marquee non-directing projects, so the story should be killer. Mix that with Blomkamp's visual style and a heavy dose of politics, weaponization, alien metaphors, poverty, and ecological issues and you have one f*cking good movie. If this movie isn't good, I'll eat my surfboard. Incidentally, Blomkamp was supposed to direct Halo 3, before the studio put the kibosh on it.
  • Honda Ruckus | Uncrate
put a surfboard carrier on this "urban scooter", and I am good to go. 1.5 gallon fill up and at 2,000 bucks this thing costs less than a new computer. and how dope is the style?! semi-matte black. i'll take one, please.

Style Wars

know.the.ledge.

Style Wars is an early documentary on hip hop culture, made by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant, made in New York City in 1983. The film has an emphasis on graffiti, although breakdancing and rapping are covered to a lesser extent. The film was originally aired on PBS television in 1983, and was subsequently shown in several film festivals to much acclaim, including the Vancouver Film Festival.

I had a DVD copy of Style Wars. Somehow it got lost in the move.

Fraser Speirs is the creator of Flickr Export for iPhoto and Aperture, the gold standards in getting your photos to Flickr on the Mac. In iPhoto 09, Apple built in basic flickr export functionality. In this post Fraser runs down the similarities and the differences between the two methods. The summary: iPhoto has some nice tricks but only goes so far, which is no surprise, as Apple regularly builds 25% of the functionality for 75% of users. Flickr Export provides the rest.

"…Having my life returned to me after a massive cardiac arrest was the convincing I needed to buy my soul back and resurrect the rubble that was once ‘RUNAMUK VISUALS’…I have spent the last 5 years creating videos for Billabong (Passion Pop, Donavon Frankenreiter ‘Alive in Tahiti’, Teahupoo Diaries, Freeway, Tropical Punch, Inside, the history of Billabong and the Occy tribute) and ive enjoyed every step of the way, but when your heart and your head say ‘the time has come’….well… ‘the time has come’" – interesting

NUEZZ

neuzz

NEUZZ is a 27 year old graffiti artist from Mexico City. I came across his work via the always excellant mexican pop culture blog The City Loves You. Neuzz mines mexican folkloric art for his inspiration and mashes it up into a wholly new modern context of graphic street art. He has several different styles he uses. I really appreciate this embrace of indigenous art and his ability to re-contextualize and modernize it. I’m really feeling his work.
