  • Official Google Blog: A new approach to China
must read press release from SVP at Google, about China's censoring authorities' organized and highly sophisticated hack attacks on Google's infrastructure as well as 20 other large companies, in various sectors as part of a plan to uncover information on human rights activists in China. This is no joke.

I repeat, this is a google press release, not conjecture. [via DF]

  • Bodhi Oser's new portfolio site
run. don't walk. to check out Oser's new portfolio site. one word: fuckingimpressive. Oser (working under Tom Adler's Art-Direction), is responsible for almost single-handedly changing the face of how surf culture is marketed. The singular design aesthetic and definitive photo editing used for Quicksilver/Roxy and mostly all of your favorite surf books, Oser's influence in surf culture can not be underestimated or oversold.
  • Surfstation – Joe Klein
"Over the past 30 years, Republicans fed the delusions that you can have low taxes and world-class public services, and Democrats acquiesced in it. It would be nice if we had an honest national conversation about revenues–and the sun-setting of many of the Bush tax cuts this year provides the perfect arena for it–but don't count on that taking place."

  • James Cameron's Avatar Movie Performance Capture Featurette

This basically sums up my thoughts on the vast teabagger of this summer right up to Joe Wilson's douchbaggery – "But Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president — no Democrat ever shouted “liar” at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq — convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it."
  • Mexico Now Enduring Worst Drought in Years – NYTimes.com

  • Charles Darwin film 'too controversial for religious America' – Telegraph
"…according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution." and ""It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There's still a great belief that He made the world in six days. It's quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules."

  • Kid Vlogs From Apple Store, We Smell a New Commercial Campaign
"Kids. They grow up so fast these days, with the Twitter and the MySpace and Tamagotchi and sports drinks. You've gotta hand it to them, though: they've got their technology and they know how to use it.

Which is why the dense YouTube account of Nicholifavs, filled with a kid who vlogs exclusively from New York City's Fifth Avenue Apple Store, is merely a natural progression in the realm of Things Kids Do Now." via Beau Colburn

Charley Harper + Habitat Skateboards

Skatedecks

Habitat Skateboards are putting out a limited edition line of Charley Harper skatedecks and shoes for it’s sponsored pros. Real classy. I’d love one of these up on the wall. Serious collectors items.

Charley Harper is a mid-century modernist illustrator and painter whose popularity is deservedly surging at the moment partly due to several high profile projects by Todd Oldham and Ammo Books.

  • Border Film Project
Border Film Project is a collaborative art project giving disposable cameras to two groups on different sides of the border: undocumented migrants crossing the desert into the United States, and American Minutemen trying to stop them. To date, we have received 73 cameras — 38 from migrants and 35 from Minutemen — with nearly 2,000 pictures in total. The pictures show the human face of immigration, and they challenge us to question our stereotypes and to see through new and personal lenses.
  • How AT&T Should Handle the Twitter iPhone Price Backlash – Advertising Age – News
if yer not in the know, Apple introduced a new iPhone 3G [s] this past monday. Of course, when Apple releases a new product millions of people all rush out to buy it. But when you have to buy it with a contract from AT&T things get dicey. When people started seeing the how much it was going to cost them to upgrade all hell broke loose on twitter. This article explains the bru-ha and why AT&T is not doing the right thing. My two cents: AT&T and most telcos are zombie corporations just like GM and Citibank. They don't exist to serve their customers, they exist to serve the interests of their shareholders. and that's it.

  • Chávez creates overnight bestseller with book gift to Obama
"A 36-year-old historical tract attacking the imperialist exploitation of Latin America has become an improbable overnight bestseller after the Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez abruptly presented a copy to Barack Obama." – add Obama's moves to open relations with Cuba and I don't know how much more happier I could be about having Obama in office. This guy has a shopping list of wrongs (our country has done over the past 40 years) and he is righting every one of them. Obama is an inspirational dude. I know I've linked it before, but for a good primer on the subject of exploitation of Latin American read "Confessions of an Economic Hitman".

House Ind. is releasing a Girard type family and in addition to the fonts, they have released new tshirts, a nativity set, alphabet blocks, a children's puzzle, lettering and Marliyn Neuhart designed Casa dolls. Basically, a bunch of cool toys for modernist loving grown-ups.
  • how 2 shoot a water shot and line up shot | on surf photography
this blog post is schizophrenic. the first part is total crap. i dislike posts like this. there's been a few, recently. instead of giving helpful, clear advice, the synopsis of part 1 is basically: don't ask questions and get a pair of balls and a camera housing and get out into the line-up and don't get in anyone's way. The author's writing style isn't cool in that old-school curmudgeon vibe that you expect from Brewer/Grannis/Servais etc… Part 2 is way better and (gulp!) actually helpful. Alex Laurel's part 2 is down to earth and to the point.

  • UNEARTHED 2006
"Graham Bury and Danielle Rubi’s exquisitely rendered photographic portraits combine a style that is more 1906 than 2006 with a large-scale format that is innovative and contemporary. Employing the antique Van Dyke process Bury and Rubi unearth regional notables and elevate them to the status of cultural icons. At once a photographic exhibit and a site-specific installation, the seventeen images of Unearthed hang in an idyllic garden setting, each piece suspended from its own freestanding armature." – looks like a beautiful project.

  • NewerTech miniStack v2
I had one of those Lacie Big Disks, the 1 Terabyte version that has two 500gb drives in it. and then thing went on the fritz, so i salvaged the drives, the data was mostly all backup data. The rub is that I couldn't find hard drive enclosures for the two IDE uATA drives that has FireWire. most enclosures either don't have a fan (bad) or are USB2.0 (worse). I spent about 4 hours combing the internet and came up with nothing. Until this. This enclosure from Newer Tech fits IDE drives, has FireWire and is shaped like a Mac Mini. and it's $50!

Lots of cool surf bloggie shturf going on in Portugal. Peep the gorgeous illustration goodness happening over at Tubus Eternus, I especially like the raw skills on display in the napkin and coffee stain sketches (top left above), so nice. Help from a little google translation, and I’m waiting to see his wine stain sketches.

Paulo Ribeiro hipped me to ‘Tubus Eterno’. Paulo also has a nice english-language surfy blog, holdin’ it down for us surf/tech/design workers. ¡Thanks Paulo!
