Lineas Derechas: Casting Call

There’s a big bru-ha going on down here, around the casting of a Mexico-based surf trip movie called Lineas Derechas (Right Handers), as in - Mexico is the land of the right handers (true true). The production company is holding the castings for the film here at Burros, Punta Mita and Sayulita (so far) with the bulk of the hopefuls coming from the Vallarta/Nayarit area. They’ve chosen a novel and interesting approach to casting the movie:

Help us cast Lineas Derechas the surf movie - Check out the “Casting Call Interviews” from a handful of Nayarit and Jalisco’s classic surf characters -and vote for your favorite surfer! Get to know these surfers as they compete for 8 spots on a luxury surf trip deep into the famous river-mouth surfbreaks of Oaxaca, and the chance to be a part of Mexican surf history!

I really like the idea of casting a surfing movie based on user participation. It adds another level of anticipation for a project like this and generates marketing and promotional value you just can’t buy. Kudos to whoever put this together, great idea!

I’m friends with a few of these guys and I’ve been in the water with nearly all of them at some point or another. You know that I gotta give a shout out to my Bucerias homies: Birri, Tzahui, Chicharo, Nadia. and shout outs to Isreal and Felipe, both top notch sayulita cats.

Take a sec to go check out the casting videos, vote for the surfers who you think you’d like to see go on the surf trip and spread the word. Oh and you can see some bad-ass shots of Birri, Tzahui and Chicharo from my flickrstream.

Surfwise

surfwise

A new documentary called Surfwise is coming out. Looks pretty good:

Like many American outsider-adventurers, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz set out to realize a utopian dream. Abandoning a successful medical practice, he sought self-fulfillment by taking up the nomadic life of a surfer. But unlike other American searchers like Thoreau or Kerouac, Paskowitz took his wife and nine children along for the ride, all eleven of them living in a 24 foot camper. Together, they lived a life that would be unfathomable to most, but enviable to anyone who ever relinquished their dreams to a straight job. The Paskowitz Family proved that America may be running out of frontiers, but it hasn’t run out of frontiersman.
