The Hot Newness

www.edfladung.com

Hey, guess who finally has a new portfolio site?! me! www.edfladung.com.

After much toiling, hand-wringing, design, redesign, coding, nail biting and shear rote image processing I’ve finally managed to launch my proper portfolio site. I’m still kicking the tires, so if you see any visual inconsistencies or weird behaviors, hip me up on the burner. Getting the photography galleries together has been particularly time consuming, so instead of waiting even longer, I’ve decided to post the site and update the photo galleries as they become ready.

This site has been a long time in the making. Sometimes working on your own site is the hardest thing a graphic/web designer can do. I started putting together the underlying structure almost a year ago and through various false starts, several different look-and-feels and many various design/photography freelance gigs I finally put my head to the grindstone and knocked it out. And now that it’s done, I’m ready to redesign it! just kidding.

Thank you to all the peoples that have lent a hand, an eye, some code, or just some good comments or feedback to help me get this thing out the door. Very much appreciated.

I look forward to getting back to a semi-normal posting schedule on Quality Peoples. I know I’ve been neglecting yall, but a brother needs to make some cake, nawmean.

Enjoy!

  • IKEA goes with Verdana | Typophile
the space-time continuum folds in on itself as IKEA switches from everyone's favorite typeface Futura to the ridiculously ugly made-for-small-text-on-monitors Verdana, in the name of style consistency across all countries including asia. Big mistake. This is like IKEA's version of "New Coke". stunningly dumb.

interesting choices with explanation. Wong Kar- Wai's "In The Mood for Love" is not on the list. major oversight. I really like that "Unbreakable" is on it. I loved that movie and still do. incidentally, is it me or is Tarantino looking a bit like a hot tranny mess?

  • YouTube – BooneOakley.com – Home Page

  • Urban Outfitters LSTN
Urban Outfitters has a pretty cool music download thingy happening on their site. it's called "LSTN" and each volume has over 20 free tracks packaged individually (versus dl'ing as a mix). Tons of great artists and there are 5 volumes already. time to find some new music…. Incidentally, why iz everyone hatin' on vowels?
  • beck :: "sunday morning" (velvet underground & nico cover)
Beck is insane! He has a new feature on his site called "Record Club". Where he and musician friends of his including Devendra Barnhart record covers of classic songs. The records are to be very minimal in production and done in under a day from start to finish with little to no rehearsal. Awesome idea! The first song to come out of Record Club is Beck's cover of "Sunday Morning (Velvet Underground & Nico). and I gotta say it's probably my most favorite VU cover ever. Beck kills it.

  • Border Film Project
Border Film Project is a collaborative art project giving disposable cameras to two groups on different sides of the border: undocumented migrants crossing the desert into the United States, and American Minutemen trying to stop them. To date, we have received 73 cameras — 38 from migrants and 35 from Minutemen — with nearly 2,000 pictures in total. The pictures show the human face of immigration, and they challenge us to question our stereotypes and to see through new and personal lenses.
  • How AT&T Should Handle the Twitter iPhone Price Backlash – Advertising Age – News
if yer not in the know, Apple introduced a new iPhone 3G [s] this past monday. Of course, when Apple releases a new product millions of people all rush out to buy it. But when you have to buy it with a contract from AT&T things get dicey. When people started seeing the how much it was going to cost them to upgrade all hell broke loose on twitter. This article explains the bru-ha and why AT&T is not doing the right thing. My two cents: AT&T and most telcos are zombie corporations just like GM and Citibank. They don't exist to serve their customers, they exist to serve the interests of their shareholders. and that's it.

I know that on a personal level, I've never talked with so many people asking the "what do I want to do with my life" question before. People are questioning much of what they felt good about before. They are considering giving up on things they've been doing for years. They're not sure where to go or what to do next. They are searching for answers and help."

  • Chávez creates overnight bestseller with book gift to Obama
"A 36-year-old historical tract attacking the imperialist exploitation of Latin America has become an improbable overnight bestseller after the Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez abruptly presented a copy to Barack Obama." – add Obama's moves to open relations with Cuba and I don't know how much more happier I could be about having Obama in office. This guy has a shopping list of wrongs (our country has done over the past 40 years) and he is righting every one of them. Obama is an inspirational dude. I know I've linked it before, but for a good primer on the subject of exploitation of Latin American read "Confessions of an Economic Hitman".
