  • Colorful writing – The Mex Files
the fine art of "notas rojas" (red notes). Mex Files details the "purple prose typical of the yellow journalism" of police reports in local mexican newspapers: "While sometimes the author — to stretch out the word count — has to resort to low tricks like referring to a police car as a “blue and white 2008 Dodge Neon, with plate number… “, the nota rota writer strives for variation in his or her craft. The banality of criminal activity sometimes reduces even the most creative of nota roja writers to clichés (there are a plethora of ways to say “corpse” — the center of attention but least interesting character in any murder story – all of which have been use to death), but the best are true artists. They still manage to surprise us, enlighten us and delight us with their mastery of the language."
  • Jessica Hische / Humble Pied.
great newish video + ichat based site about creatives sharing advice. and the best quote I've heard all week: "“The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life.” – Jessica Hirsche
  • I Gave My 3 Year Old an iPhone: Have I Created a Monster?
awesome piece on young children using the iphone to learn. some of you are already cringing (yes you, in the back), but I think it's great. this kind of thing is gonna be so standard in 20 years. I thin it's kind of scary to think that the jobs your kids will have when they grow up, won't be invented til they're in high school. and your kids will learn two to four times as much as you have, in your whole lifetime, by the time they get out of college. • YouTube – adidas Originals – Star Wars Collection
the shoes? meh. but that Imperial March remix is wicked awesome.
  • Polaroid PIC 1000
mock-ups of the new film-based under-$100 Polaroid cameras that are coming out. These are the result of The Impossible Project that I linked to a while back. They bought the rights to produce Polaroid cameras and film stock. Freakin' awesome. I'll have the wood grain one, thank you!

DRIFT | perspectives in surfing

drift north america

After a few months of building anticipation Drift Surfing Mag’s North American Edition is now live. Its format is a hybrid of longer, more in depth features and shorter blog articles. The features are full of eye-poppingly large photos, with in dpeth interviews and extended captions. Joe Conway is the editor and he has assembled an impressive team of contributers:

Perspective(s) in Surfing.

Drift Surfing continues and expands upon the work of a modest British magazine started about five years ago. Now exclusively online, the independent North American Edition is an open venue for shared creative output, focusing on what’s happening both in and out of the water. We seek out the perspectives of innovators, instigators, inventors and icons in hopes of gaining a broader perspective on the continually changing culture surrounding surfing. Drift is by, for and about the artists, filmmakers, shapers, activists, musicians, organizers, appreciators and experts looking for something different in today’s surf media.

If you are reading Drift – you are Drift.

Enjoy.

The first four features are impressive!: Portfolio: Joe Curren – Interviewed and written by everyone’s favorite Brazilian Jair Bartoleto, Art of the MatterRyan Tatar talks to Art Brewer about his Bunker Spreckels book, Pop Culture Hangover – Ryan Tatar interviews Al Knost, Substituted Blue – Belinda Peterson-Baggs and Dane Peterson go to Indonesia on an aid supply mission.

Oh and I’m contributing to the blog section with writing, photography and interviews, some with a Mexico-specific slant, others without. My first posts are a short series on road-tripping Mexico: On the Road: Mexico’s West Coast, Part 1 and Part 2. I’ve got a ton of good stuff in the pipes. Good stuff in the makings.

Go take a look at Drift Surfing and compliment the staff on a successful launch!

This just in: Jamie at Pnut Luv just posted a good interview with Drift Editor Jon Conway for her “Surf Friday” Series.

Isn’t that the best job in journalism? Yes. Nobody leaves a New Yorker job voluntarily. I was fired. And over the next few days, I’ll tell that story here, in 140 " – great story told in 140 chunks.
  • Copyright Critics Rationalize Theft – WSJ.com
utterly retarded article on how writers, composers, designers and other content creators whose work is easily copied/duplicated need to fight back with copyright against the faceless masses of copyright breakers. Let's get this straight people: COPYRIGHT IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. Copyright is the domain of crumbling, antiquated civilizations. end of story.

  • Photo Editor's Corner | SurfingMagazine.com
Interesting anti-canon rant from Surfing Mag Photo Editor Peter Taras: "I hate Canon. So much in fact that from time to time I write their help desk and just spat "f–k you, f–k you, I hope you guys rot in hell." And I’m generally a happy guy." – I generally agree with his viewpoint. I've had the mirror on my 5D come unglued twice. Each time it's costed me over $200 in shipping fees to repair and takes over a month.
